A few times in our lives, we wake up on a day and have a feeling it will be a day we will remember forever. For 6 American average soccer coaches serving in China, today was such a day. There are not words to describe the feelings and emotions that we experienced as we got to partner with an amazing group of brothers and sisters from Haidian church to serve over 50 Chinese kids at the soccer camp.
I'll put a few photos here to capture some of the day. We will write more when the activity level slows a bit.
The kids began the day at the church to get organized with their teams.
We played soccer in the rain - the kids had a blast on the field.
The children are so beautiful - these twin girls named Laura and Ruby stole our hearts.
The volunteer coaches from Haidian church for the heart of the camp so well ... This team was late to come out and play their afternoon game. We found the coach (who is college aged) away from the field with all of his boys, and he was leading them in prayer. Favorite moment of the day.
Once the camp was over, we attended a pro soccer match at the huge Beijing soccer stadium with a dozen friends from the church who were helping at the camp. It was an amazing cultural experience. We didn't understand a word they were saying/chanting/singing, but it was obvious that the Chinese love their soccer teams!
The soccer fans in Beijing are unreal ... The stadium was ringed with riot police and the supporters of both teams yell constantly at each other the whole time!
We get to get up and do this all over again tomorrow ... We can't wait. Oh ... As it was Kevin Golden's birthday today. I am betting he will never again have the birthday song sung to him the way the entire camp did today!
All of you who supported this soccer mission with finances, equipment, tickets to the game, and prayer, you have made an incredible impact. Pastor Wu from Haidian church is very pleased, and we are excited to finish the camp and bring the gospel tomorrow evening at the celebration party.
